Prepare for New Headshots
If
you are new to show business there is something you should know about
HEADSHOTS. A headshot is
your calling card when it comes to getting work in this industry.
An agent, casting director, manager and anybody else in the
business is going to want to see your headshot (and resume) before
working with you and it should really look good.
If you are just getting started in this business, don’t panic
if you don’t have a headshot yet.
Like anybody else, you have to start somewhere and if you
intend to have a long career, you will always try to improve your
acting ability, your appearance and your headshot over time. Even if
you are a veteran, keep reading because we have some good tips for you
also in this article.
You might start out with one headshot; depending on what it is you
want to do. As you grow
and become more established in the entertainment industry, you may
want to branch out to different areas.
For instance, you may start out simply wanting to do
industrials or training films since they are sometimes easier to break
into. As you develop your
acting skills, you may want to get into commercials, television drama,
sitcoms or movies. While
one headshot might work in all situations, that is not usually the
case. Since those people
in casting sometimes lack imagination, you/your agent might want to
have the flexibility to send a headshot that evokes the essence or
appearance of the character in the role you are submitting for.
For this reason some agents or managers will insist that you
have a couple of different headshots with different looks. For
example, one headshot could be of you as a businessman dressed in a
suit and tie and the other headshot could be of you as a rebel in a
t-shirt, leather jacket and jeans.
Here
are a few simple tips that can help you no matter what stage of the
game that you are in. Even
if you have a great headshot that is working well for you, always
think ahead. If the time
should come that the headshot isn’t working as well, you want to
pursue a different type of work or your age/appearance changes to the
point that the headshot no longer looks like you, you will be forced
to update your headshot. Since
getting new headshots is really inevitable, do a couple of things.
Think about the time frame in which you would like to have the
new headshots. Begin experimenting with different looks. For example,
you can ask your barber, hair stylist, friends and family for
suggestions on a slightly new hairstyle.
In an effort to maintain current clients who like your current
“look”, try to make subtle changes that won’t chase your
existing clients away. You
simply want to update your look and refine it … not change it
altogether. Also begin to look for a photographer who has a style that
will take your headshots to the next level.
The
new headshot should outshine the existing headshot and if things go
well, you will begin to get more calls and auditions.
Since the headshot is your calling card, people won’t call
you unless the headshot tells them that they should.
While the headshot is all important, be sure to constantly work
on your resume, because that is the other part of the total package.
Finally, work, work, and work on your craft.
The headshot and resume may get you the audition, but once you
arrive … you must deliver the goods.
